"A map they all wanted, but couldn't buy."
"Serious fishermen statewide know of the legendary Stream Map. For the past twenty years, it's a map they all wanted, but couldn't buy." --Wendy Plowman The Dillsburg Banner
"I've been looking for a copy of the Stream Map for over 10 years." --Bill Kodrich, Former President Pennsylvania
Council of Trout Unlimited
Professor Higbee was offered $400.00 for one of his last copies of the map
But why? What makes the map so special?
Howard Higbee, a Penn State University professor, spent over 30 years creating the first stream and lake map, a map that few map makers would ever attempt.
He started with aerial photographs and 909 topographic maps (1 inch equals 2,000 feet). Then, he reduced again and again. By hand, with sharpened pencil
points, he drew every stream and lake onto the map.
I wouldn't need to write another word if I were able to lay a Stream Map in front of you at this very moment.
I've shown the Stream and Lake Map to hundreds of anglers, and the first words out of their mouths are almost always the same. "Where can I get one?"
I'm pretty sure you would react the same way! But -- with online resolution what it is and the large map sizes -- it's very difficult to properly show the maps online. As you view the maps on this site, please
keep-in-mind that there is no substitute for seeing the whole map spread out in front
of you.
"I'd take you there but I'd have to blindfold you."
As publishers of the Stream Maps, we've come in contact with anglers of all levels of experience -- from top ranked fishing authors to beginners. Without
exception, they all run their finger across the map until they locate their favorite
spot. One guy jokingly said, "I'll pay you $100 to erase that one." Another
said, "I know a fantastic spot. I'd take you there but I'd have to blindfold you."
Secret Spots
We've heard many similar stories about "secret spots." They have something in common -- that is, they aren't all necessarily extremely remote -- but just hidden. Places, so the speak, "just over the hill" maybe even "right under your
nose." For example, some of the best smallmouth bass fishing in the country is
right in front of the Pennsylvania Governor's mansion.
The biggest brown I've ever seen.
And, these "secret spot" stories aren't simply "fish tales." We took one avid angler up on his offer to take us to his secret spot -- after he made us swear an oath of secrecy. He took us to a spot most anglers wouldn't give a second
glance. It was a small stream, hard to see because of the dense brush, including
briar bushes. The best way to approach was under an 1800s stone railroad bridge.
We had to inch along a very narrow ledge, clutching the stone wall behind us with both hands while clenched teeth held my rod -- better to lose my Sage rod than fall into that cold water, I thought. At the other end of the tunnel the
stream turned into a small waterfall dropping two feet into a surprisingly large
hole about 100 feet across and very deep.
Standing in the darkness of the tunnel and looking down into the pool, our newfound fishing buddy said, "There it is!" Where? I could only see a submerged
tree and several big rocks. Just then the biggest rock moved. Oh my God -- that's not
a rock! It was the biggest brown trout I'd ever seen -- outside of a hatchery. It
had to be over 30 inches! Wow -- maybe it was a state record!
As we hid in the shadows under the bridge, our friend tried to get its attention with a nymph. But after several casts, the monster slowly moved to the right -- fading out of sight into the depths.
Oh well -- maybe next time. We went on to have a decent day -- each catching and releasing several nice browns. But for me, just knowing that really big fish exists in small streams is very exciting. And, yes, this stream is on the map.
In fact, every stream in the state is on the map. But I'm sorry -- I promised not to
tell.
It's a thrill to go to your very own hidden spot knowing that a really big fish could end up on your line.
10% of All Anglers Catch 90% of the Fish.
The ten-percent are the guys driving by you on their way to a spot better than the spot you are fishing. They aren't about to reveal their secrets or
tell you where they are going. If you fall into the 90% group of average anglers
you are probably spending most of your precious fishing time with your line in easy
places to find and get to.
You may be doing everything else correctly. You have the right equipment -- and the top lures, flies, or bait. But, if you are fishing over-fished
waters at the wrong time, you are usually wasting your time.
Everyone's done this at some point in his or her fishing career. You're driving near a stream anxious to get your line in the water -- you spot several other
anglers fishing and think, "They must know something." Or, maybe there are no other
anglers -- but you notice the telltale signs of crowds -- fishhooks in trees, old bait
containers and streamside trails so trampled they feel like sidewalks underfoot.

Avoid Highway Fishing
Then, oh-boy, you see nice-sized fish. And they are really close. You cast and practically hit a big one with your bait. But instead of striking, it appears
to yawn and doesn't budge. A sure sign of over-fished water. Whenever fish see hundreds
of anglers in one day, they practically become permanently spooked.
In total contrast, consider the stories of fishing in the remotest places on earth such as Alaska, Labrador, and Siberia. Fish rarely see humans or
artificial lures and flies -- and anglers lucky enough to travel to these areas
report hooking up with and releasing over 100 huge fish in one day.
More water than you ever thought existed.
We are not trying to say that Professor Higbee's® maps will locate waters that have never been fished. But, the first thing you will see when you look at
your map is more water than you ever thought existed -- a virtual lifetime of streams
and lakes for you to explore.
Your big advantage.
Your advantage is that a majority of anglers think of fishing as a trip to the mall -- where they simply park and catch fish, unaware of water that they can't see
from their car. Now, with the map and Explorer's Guide, you have the upper hand --
you can avoid over-fished waters.
"Mine Looks Great on the Wall." Joe Humphreys, Author, Joe Humphrey's Trout Tactics
Here's what others have said about how a Professor Higbee's® Stream and Lake Map looks on their wall. Jerry Packo, Scranton Times said: "Makes a great addition to a den
wall. It's also something to be passed down generation to generation." Paul McHugh of
the San Francisco Chronicle said: "This wondrous document, a four by five foot map, shows
every significant creek, stream, river, and lake. And the stark beauty of that
network of interlocking, lacy natural patterns makes the map an interesting wall decoration."
Not only a usefool tool, the map is also a work-of-art you can sit back and admire for years to come.
